Boasting a fantastic opening sequence rarely seen on the big screen, this groundbreaking 1980 reggae drama centres around a West-London soundsystem fronted by Blue (Brinsley Forde of the band Aswad). In Thatcher’s England, Blue has to tackle issues of race and police brutality, along with worries about his two-timing girlfriend. There’s also an upcoming soundclash with Jah Shaka’s competing soundsystem. Life is spiralling towards a climax.
Why should you see this film?
Co-written with Martin Stallman (Quadrophenia), director Franco Rosso’s portrayal of Brixton and surrounds provides a highly authentic dramatisation of a unique culture set in a politically charged time and place. Add to that a soundtrack composed by dub-reggae legend Dennis Bovell, plus tracks by Johnny Clarke, I Roy, Aswad, Yabby U, and you have a cinematic experience that will blow the speakers.
