Back To The Future (PG)

‘Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.’

Does it get more 80’s Oedipus than this? Our good buddy Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is accidentally sent back in time thirty years by our other crazy scientist pal Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) in the coolest of all cool cars ever, the DeLorean. Arriving in 1955, he meets his mum (Lea Thompson) who turns her romantic teen feelings towards him (her son!), straying from George McFly (Crispin Glover) who she needs to fall in love with or Marty will never come to be. There’s a lot of weird feelings, an under-the-sea themed prom, bully Biff, Libyan terrorists (!) and a flux capacitor. Classic.

Why should you see this film?

Perfectly blending sci-fi, action, teen romance with some good ol’ fashioned family fun, this is one of the quintessential films of the 80s and it’s worth seeing just for Crispin Glover’s performance alone. Though Michael J. Fox was the first choice for the now iconic Marty McFly role, he had to pass it up due to Family Ties commitments and was briefly replaced by Eric Stoltz. Zemeckis felt that Stoltz wasn’t cool enough with riding a skateboard in the film however and Fox was eventually signed on. Phew.
