Overview

He’s been around the block, Don Johnston (Bill Murray), a retired former Don Juan. His latest in a long line of lovers, Sherry (Julie Delpy) has decided to leave him when Don receives an anonymous letter from a former flame, alerting him to the existence of a son, now age 19, who may come looking to meet the father he’s never known. Don seems unfussed, but his nosey neighbour Winston (Jeffrey Wright) encourages him to investigate further. Together, they track down the location of several of Don’s lovers (played by Sharon Stone, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange, and Tilda Swinton), and Don sets out on a road trip to reunite with each and see if he figure out where he's been and what it means.

Why See This Film

Bill is enigmatic as always, seen here in Late Murray phase, playing things quieter and more contemplative. Conversely, this Jim Jarmusch film is utterly Jarmuschian, with its languid pace, lifelike ambiguity, and emphasis of mood and tone over plot points and exaggerated action. The idea of an aging lothario going back over his life one girlfriend at a time may sound like a dirge, but each of the women is revealed to be a complex character in her own right— one with dreams and a life far beyond Don's frozen memories of their time together.
