Overview

Nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, Only Lovers Left Alive is a bitingly cool tale from idiosyncratic auteur Jim Jarmusch. Tom Hiddleston stars opposite Tilda Swinton as a reclusive vampire at odds with the modern world. After a rich history of influencing musicians and scientists across centuries, he now holes himself up outside of Detroit, recording and inventing while living off blood-bank donations. When his sulky depression gets to the point of suicide, his wife Eve (Swinton) returns from living in Tangier to console him. Shortly after they’re joined by her little sister (Mia Wasikowska) who brings trouble to their newfound happiness in blood bohemia.

Why See This Film

Praised as one of the director’s finest, Only Lovers Left Alive has all of Jim Jarmusch’s nocturnal moody glamour and downtown ennui coursing through its veins. Boasting a lute-heavy rock score primarily by Jarmusch's band SQÜRL with contributions from Zola Jesus and Madeline Follin among others (plus a stellar track list as well), this film is a heavily-soaked cultural sponge – sinking its teeth into the great poets, writers, scientists and musicians of history, particularly those from Detroit. To top it off, the vampiric cast is fantastic, featuring appearances by Mia Wasikowska, Jeffrey Wright and late greats Anton Yelchin and John Hurt.
