Overview

Director Lois Patiño has created a contemplative and deeply introspective work that becomes almost a collective meditation with Samsara, a unique fantasy-documentary-realism hybrid best experienced in the cinema. Words from Bardo Thodol (the Tibetan Book of the Dead) are our guide as we accompany a soul through different bodies across the forests of Laos and beaches of Zanzibar, travelling rhythmically over stunning landscapes and serene interior reflections. This bewitching journey through time and space received rave reviews at Berlinale 2023 and Antenna Documentary Festival, now playing for an exclusive limited season at Golden Age.

“Remarkable...part film, part guided meditation, it’s unlike anything else you can experience in the cinema.

Why You Should See This Film

Part anthropological documentary, part fantasy-realist drama with an astonishing sequence that involves the viewer as a participant, Samsara brings the vivid landscapes of two countries to life in gorgeous, saturated 16mm. The influence of Apichatpong Weerasethakul can be felt strongly in this uniquely reflective film, with Patiño also drawing from the light installation work of James Turrell to interpret the Bardo Thodol’s meditations on colour through the Buddhist cycle of transmigration and rebirth.
