Overview

Neo-Tokyo, 2019. The city is well on the way to rebuilding after World War III. Kaneda and Tetsuo, two high school drop-outs, are members of a joy-riding motorcycle gang who stumble upon a secret government project to develop telekinetic humans one night. As the incident unlocks something within him, Tetsuo learns of the existence of a mysterious figure called Akira, the project's most powerful subject, and is determined to meet him. Meanwhile Kaneda chases after a girl, Kei, who turns out to be part of a resistance cell focussed on freeing the government’s experiments.

Why See This Film

Regarded by critics and fans as THE landmark anime film, Akira changed the animation medium forever, leaving a lasting influence on science fiction, Hollywood, video games and even Japanese street style. Painstakingly illustrated over 160,000 animation cels and set to an awe-inspiring score by folk group Geinō Yamashirogumi, Katsuhiro Otomo’s epic adaptation of his own manga is said to perhaps be the most expensive anime film of all time (or at least for its time), and if you ask us, it shows! Such smooth movement and minute attention to detail is seldom achieved at such a vast scale; Akira is nothing short of breathtaking.
