“I don’t remember the film, but I remember the feelings”
Winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes and Best Foreign Language film at the 2012 Academy awards (as well as nominations for Best Actress, Director, Screenplay and Picture), Amour is a tender portrait of a loving aging couple faced with some of life’s most painful questions. As their daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) lives abroad, music teachers Anne and Georges Laurent (Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva) live out their retirement in their cosy Paris apartment. One morning Anne has a stroke and her health takes a sharp decline. While George does all he can to take care of her, the two find themselves at the crossroads of difficult decisions.
Based upon a situation in his own family, Michael Haneke explores what to do when faced with a loved one's suffering with heartbreaking warmth, humanity and intelligence – far from the coldness of Funny Games and his other social scrutinies yet unflinchingly demanding of the viewer nonetheless. Haneke wrote the film for Jean-Louis Trintignant, pulling him back onto the screen after 14 years absence to unite with Emmanuelle Riva – their soulful duet is powerfully moving and achingly unforgettable.
