Overview

The 1981 lavish musical that bankrupted Coppola, One from the Heart: Reprise is a chance to set the record straight, with a tighter runtime and dazzling 4K restoration from the original camera negative overseen by Francis himself. On the anniversary of five tumultuous years together, free-spirited Frannie (Teri Garr) and pragmatist Hank (Frederic Forrest) aren't sure if they should make up or break up. After Frannie walks off into the sunset with suitcase in hand, she and Hank wander the streets of Las Vegas and each encounter what seems like their dream lovers (dashing Raul Julia and stunning Nastassja Kinski), but after all the singing and dancing is through will they remain in a fantasy or find their way back to something real?

Why You Should See This Film

The money's all there on screen, folks: why shoot in boring Las Vegas when you can painstakingly recreate the Las Vegas of your dreams with elaborate soundstages and scale miniatures, including the airport and a life size jet? Stunning visuals aside this was a genuine labour of love, part affectionate pastiche of swooning musical romances (earning composer Tom Waits an Oscar nomination) and part reflection of the real-life marital and family woes of the Coppolas in the wake of filming Apocalypse Now. Shot with the incredible attention to detail and borderline experimental filmmaking methods he would expand on in Rumble Fish and Dracula, One From The Heart only grossed under a third of its budget and landed Coppola in Director Jail for quite some time after— but what a way to go.
