Overview

The man known only as M (Markku Peltola) is a welder who comes to Helsinki and is the victim of a violent attack that robs him of his memory. After coming back from the "dead" he attempts to rebuild his life among the homeless drifters in his area, finding a connection with Salvation Army worker Irma (Kati Outenin). As M realises his past is a person he no longer wishes to be he must reconcile with the future he might build with Irma and his new friends. The Man Without a Past sees Kaurismäki at his most slyly hopeful, daydreaming a way out for some of his hard-luck losers.

Why You Should See This Film

Kaurismäki’s perhaps most accessible film, winner of the Cannes Grand Prix and Best Actress for regular player Kati Outinen, The Man Without a Past is a more warmly humanist interpolation of the themes the Finnish auteur has been chasing throughout his career. A kind of inversion of the coldness inherent in his previous work, this film shows the potential evolution and camaraderie possible when social mores are broken down. The story simply unfolds with the regularity of everyday life, in all its pleasures and pains.
