“Strange, it's as if I have known you for a long time.”
Junior high school student and aspiring writer Shizuku Tsukishima lives a peaceful life with her family in suburban Tokyo, spending her days frequenting the library and translating English language songs into Japanese. When she meets a boy her age who is remarkably driven in his passion to master violin making, Shizuku is inspired to pursue her dreams of becoming an author and throws herself completely into the fantastical worlds of her imagination. Following the quotidian rhythms of everyday life, Whisper of the Heart luxuriates in the bittersweet nostalgia of young love and longing for the future.
The only feature film directed by Kondō (previously a lead animator on Porco Rosso and Kiki's Delivery Service, among others) before his untimely passing in 1998. Kondō understood only too well the struggle of balancing art with one's own physical and mental health, and Whisper of the Heart is a poignant depiction of the search for meaning through creative works. Deeply evocative of the teenage rollercoaster of self doubt and passionate enthusiasm, this is one for all the dreamers on the road to self discovery.
