Overview

The much-loved tale of Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou), a charismatic young French woman whose gentle naivety and curiosity has the power to change the lives of those around her. Thought to have a heart defect when she was born and kept away from other children, Amélie has a very original view of the world – one of whimsy and adventure that explodes when she moves to Montmartre and works in a café. Upon finding a small treasure box in her flat, Amelie begins to devote her life to helping her customers and neighbours – each more eccentric than the next – without them knowing. While she works her magic with garden gnomes, paintings and unrequited love, Amelie falls into an adventure of her own, a game of photobooth cat-and-mouse with a mysterious stranger (Mathieu Kassovitz).

Why You Should See This Film

Beautifully pieced together by director Jean-Pierre Jeaunet (The City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement) and with an evocative accordian score by Yann Tierson, Amélie began the world’s enduring love affair with the sublime Audrey Tautou. Filmed on location in Paris, this is a special gem indeed – wildly romantic and playful too.
