Originally conceived as a segment of Chungking Express that veered off in its own direction, Fallen Angels charts the interlacing fates of a handful of lost souls reaching out for human connection amidst the neon-soaked night world of Hong Kong. A coolly detached hitman (Leon Lai) is looking to go straight while his business partner (Michelle Reis) secretly yearns for him. Meanwhile, a mute delinquent (Takeshi Kaneshiro) wreaks mischief by night and finds himself entangled with an emotional wreck (Charlie Yeung) furiously on the hunt for the elusive ‘Blondie’ (Karen Mok), who supposedly wronged her. Swinging between hardboiled noir and slapstick lunacy with giddy abandon, Fallen Angels is both a dizzying, dazzling city symphony and a poignant meditation on love, loss, and longing in a metropolis that never sleeps.
Shot by legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle with bulbous wide lenses that transform faces into landscapes and heighten action tenfold, Fallen Angels is easily one of Wong Kar-wai’s most visually striking and frenetic portraits of loneliness and yearning in the big smoke. Accompanied by a Trip-Hop-heavy soundtrack, this ode to the strange creatures of the night is a favourite of ours and a must-see for fans of Chungking Express as well as newcomers to Wong Kar-wai’s oeuvre.
