Overview

In celebration of its 70th anniversary, we’re honoured to finally bring the original 1954 Kaiju classic Godzilla to the Golden Screen. As fish catches drop to zero and freighters mysteriously disappear near Odo Island, rumours of a gigantic dinosaur-like creature surface and the Japanese government sends palaeontologist Kyohei Yamane (Takashi Shimura) to investigate. When the monster dubbed Gojira suddenly attacks Tokyo Bay, attention flocks to Yamane’s colleague Daisuke Serizawa (Akihiko Hirata) who has been developing a device that could cause mass destruction in the wrong hands but might be humanity’s only hope against the apocalyptic radioactive reptile.

Why See This Film

Behold the original entrance of the King of the Monsters that would spark the world’s longest running film franchise to date and pioneer the Kaiju genre as we know it today. While its grand pop culture legacy is characterised by iconic creatures, cute miniatures and guys wrestling in floppy monster suits, the original Godzilla stands far apart as a serious, mournful and urgent plea against nuclear power and weapons, released only nine years after the American atrocities inflicted upon Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Featuring a powerful cast, incredible special effects and one of the greatest film scores ever, Godzilla 1954 is an absolutely essential work of cinema.
