Thai box office phenomenon How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is a keenly observed dramedy of familial scheming and greed, with a surprisingly heartfelt emotional core. M (singer Putthipong Assaratanakul, aka Billkin), a university dropout whose attempts at a streaming career aren't quite going as planned, still lives at home with his long-suffering mother. When his cousin Mui (Tontawan Tantivejakul) inherits a mansion from the grandfather she looked after in his final days, M gets the bright idea to volunteer as caretaker for his own ailing Amah (Usha Seamkhum)— but the rest of the family has their own plans to get their hands on grandma's house.
“A soul-stirring tale of love, loss and newfound understanding”
The potent combination of a good laugh and a good cry partly explains the massive appeal this slice-of-life story has had, but another key is its deep relatability: despite depicting specific aspects of East Asian multigenerational families, the human truths at the heart can resonate with anyone, in particular the complex tension between love and money. What begins as a classic "get grandma's house" comedy deepens into a moving exploration of the relationship between the youth who need money and the elderly who want human connection, and the importance of time spent together before the end.
