Overview

Both disturbing and brilliant, anime master Satoshi Kon’s 1997 debut feature Perfect Blue is a story of the dark side of pop superstardom and the border between fantasy and reality. Mima Kirigoe (Junko Iwao) is a member of the ultra-successful J-pop group CHAM!. Eager for a career change, she decides to pursue acting, much to the dismay of one obsessive fan, Me-Mania, who is upset at her abandoning her clean-cut girl group image for more risqué roles. As this fan turns stalker, and grisly acts start occurring around her, Mima begins to lose her grip on reality.

Why See This Film

A noted influence on Darren Aranofsky’s Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, Perfect Blue is listed on countless lists of the greatest anime films of all time. Dealing with themes of fantasy that resurface in Kon’s other works including Paprika (2006), it’s a beautifully conceived and highly evocative look at obsession, identity, voyeurism and the depths of the human psyche. B-movie master Roger Corman described it well: “If Alfred Hitchcock partnered with Walt Disney, they’d make a picture like this”.

Advisory: Perfect Blue contains scenes of sexual violence.
