Family bonds unravel and generations clash in Mohammad Rasoulof’s domestic drama turned paranoid political thriller, The Seed of the Sacred Fig. In Tehran, Iman (Missagh Zareh) and his family celebrate his recent promotion to an investigating judge shortly before public protests erupt against the compulsory hijab. A schism of clashing views develops between Iman, his daughters Sana (Setareh Maleki) and Rezvan (Mahsa Rostami) and his wife Najmeh (Soheila Golestani). When his service weapon suddenly goes missing, Iman grows paranoid and even begins to suspect his own family.
Winner: FIPRESCI Prize & Special Jury Prize
Nominee: Best International Feature Film
“Brilliant… hailed as a late-breaking favourite… mesmerisingly gripping… electrically tense”
“Thrilling, courageous”
“An absorbing mixture of the personal and the political...this is an extraordinary achievement”
Bravely filmed in secret, at times using confronting real footage from the 2022 – 2023 Mahsa Amini protests, Mohammad Rasoulof’s politically incendiary film lead to his persecution by the state of Iran and forced him to flee the country, smuggling the footage to Hamburg. The Seed of the Sacred Fig examines the current climate in Iran with a nuanced study of the Iranian family unit; each member holding their own loyalties, beliefs and reactions to the oppressive regime, bringing them closer together or tearing them apart as the film’s Hitchcockian screws tighten. Bitingly critical, wildly unpredictable and truly courageous, it’s one of the most extraordinary films of our current moment.
