Overview

In 1994, an elderly man named Alvin Straight rode across Iowa and Wisconsin on a lawn mower to visit his estranged, ill brother, Lyle. That real life story is the inspiration for this charming, low key 1999 film from cult favourite and cinema auteur David Lynch. Much loved character actor Richard Farnsworth plays Alvin, a 73-year-old World War II veteran, living alone with his intellectually challenged daughter, Rose (played by Sissy Spacek). Neither one can drive, Alvin due to his poor eyesight, and Rose due to her condition. Throw a bit of Harry Dean Stanton in the mix and you really couldn’t ask for a more soothing, American setting, handled with wonderful finesse by the director who gave us Eraserhead and Blue Velvet.

Why See This Film

While Lynch’s other films are known for their surreal atmosphere and explosive mix of violence and humour, this Walt Disney produced film is a straight story of brotherly love and is set amongst rustic environs and small town characters which Lynch always handles with such affection. Accompanied by a touching score from the great Angelo Badalamenti (one of his very best), Richard Farnsworth quietly soars in his final role with a fragile smile and storied eyes; evoking a gentle, kind sadness that flows throughout every fibre of the film – one that is unmistakably Lynchian (in the true sense of the word).
