Overview

When phone scammers manage to rob Thelma Post (June Squibb) of $10,000 by imitating her supposedly imprisoned grandson, the police and her own family advise her to let the matter drop. With the help of her accomplice Ben (Richard Roundtree, Shaft) and his two-person mobility scooter the two bust out of assisted living, acquire a gun and head off on a wild search for Thelma's money, and justice. Fast, funny and surprisingly touching, Thelma is the first starring role for legendary character actor Squibb (Far from Heaven, among countless films) along with the bittersweet final performance of Roundtree.

Thelma is about the indomitable human urge to keep going and the hard-won wisdom to know when to heed time’s warnings.

Washington Post

Squibb is as understatedly funny and commanding as you’d expect...what a joy to witness

The Guardian (UK)

The rare kind of film you can watch with your parents—or your grandparents, or your kids—confident in the knowledge that you’ll all have a great time at the movies.

Why You Should See This Film

For his debut feature writer/director Josh Margolin drew inspiration from a near miss with a scammer encountered by his own beloved grandmother, fortunately averted when her family intervened. His awareness of how navigating the world had become increasingly difficult and dangerous for her inspired the action film riffs, where obstacles like a steep staircase become a Mission Impossible high stakes nail-biter. Soldiering on with grit and a smile, Thelma at its heart has something quite meaningful to say about aging, autonomy and how time creeps up while we're looking the other way.
