Overview

Returned Vietnam War veteran Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) is doing his best to eke out a normal life, working for the post office and and living in a rundown Brooklyn apartment with his girlfriend. A caring friend and the doctor at a local VA hospital attempt to help treat Jacob's PTSD, which takes the form of frightening apparitions and flashbacks to violent combat— along with memories of a family who may not have ever been real. Contact with his surviving platoon mates reveals they have all been experiencing the same horrifying hallucinations, but when they attempt to uncover the truth of what happened to them the fabric of reality becomes more unstable, as menacing figures pursue Jacob and those he loves.

Why You Should See This Film

Jacob's Ladder was in development for over a decade and at one point nearly starred Tom Hanks, but this strange metaphysical horror with echoes of MKUltra was too much for major studios until director Adrian Lyne managed to find a production company that would allow him to execute his vision. Lyne and cinematographer Jeffrey L. Kimball (a frequent Tony Scott collaborator) drew inspiration from the art of Francis Bacon to craft the oppressive visuals and deeply unsettling sequences of surreal body horror. A bit of a sleeper on release, its legacy can be seen in its influence on M. Night Shyamalan and Christopher Nolan, along with the Silent Hill video game series.
