“I’m so embarrassed, I'm not a real person yet ”
An iconic collaboration between Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, Frances Ha stands the test of time, holding up as a fresh and vibrant fable of modern friendship. New Yorker Frances (Gerwig) is a struggling modern dancer at odds with the position she's found herself in when her best friend/sister figure Sophie (Sting's daughter Mickey Sumner) suddenly moves out. This spurs her on to carve out a new path for herself; she's unwilling to let go of her dreams even though it's a daily struggle to just be an adult. Uncomfortable dinner parties, awkwardly goofy dates and reckless vacations care of mail-order credit cards are the familiar scenes we see, but Frances/Gerwig's enduring resoluteness and slightly daffy charm leave no room for cliché.
Steering clear of the usual romantic tropes, Frances Ha is about the love and built-in camaraderie of two best friends who go through the inevitable cycles and changes of a relationship. It not only passes the Bechdel test, it sails right through. Gerwig is fascinating to watch on screen—her effortless performance is fresh, funny, and more importantly, honest.
