Overview

Compassionate, sombre and at times very funny, Hard Truths marks the reunion of phenomenal actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste (giving a performance for the ages here) and acclaimed writer, director and improvisationalist Mike Leigh (Secrets & Lies, Naked, Life is Sweet). Pansy (Jean-Baptiste) is always angry. At home with her plumber husband Curtley (David Webber) and layabout son Moses (Tuwaine Barrett) or even out in the supermarket and the hairdresser; Pansy takes every opportunity to snipe, sneer and complain. She hates seeing people and she’d rather stay in bed all day. Why? She couldn’t say exactly. With Mother’s Day approaching, her sister Chantelle (Michele Austin) presses her to visit their mother’s grave, bringing old grievances to the surface.

A stunning film full of heart and compassion... Leigh seems to have a magical ability to make the everyday captivating to watch... Marianne Jean-Baptiste is Oscar-worthy”

Why You Should See This Film

Where was Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s Oscar? After watching Mike Leigh’s latest, you’ll be wondering the very same. Finding the characters and story in Leigh’s signature process of rehearsals and improvisations, the Hard Truths team have mixed tragedy and comedy to craft an earnest and empathetic portrait of a woman living with anxiety and depression that gives no easy answers, no clinical explanations, focussing instead on her every day, her relationships, the highs, the lows and everything in-between. Beautifully shot, it is also the final work of frequent collaborating cinematographer Dick Pope who passed away late last year.
